    Born in 1948 in Tochigi Prefecture. Geophysicist. Director, Climate Variability Prediction and Application Research Group, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. Graduated from the School of Science, University of Tokyo and received his doctor of science degree from the university’s Department of Earth and Planetary Science. Foreign associate member of the Académie de Marine, France. Has been head of the Department of Earth and Planetary Science and dean of the School of Science, University of Tokyo. Proposed in the early 1980s with S. George Philander of Princeton University the mechanisms that cause El Niño. Subsequently discovered the Indian Ocean dipole and El Niño Modoki. Recipient of numerous academic awards, including the Sverdrup Gold Medal from the American Meteorological Society. Was awarded the Imperial Medal with Purple Ribbon.
