Tokyo, Feb. 20 (Jiji Press)—Tokyo International Airport’s Terminal 2, currently for domestic flights, is slated to host international flights as well, from March 2020 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics that year, informed sources have said.
The transport ministry has decided to allow All Nippon Airways, which operates domestic flights at Terminal 2 of the airport at Haneda, to run international flights there, according to the sources.
Seven airplane parking lots in the southern part of the terminal will be made available for international flights, with two of them exclusively for international flights. Construction and other related work is scheduled to start this autumn at the earliest.
The airport has International Terminal, which opened in 2010, in addition to its two domestic terminals. But a large-scale expansion of the international terminal is difficult due to limited space, while the number of international passengers is seen surging in the run-up to the 2020 Games.
In April-December 2016, ANA saw the number of passengers on its international flights jump 11 % from a year earlier to 6.75 million. The unit of ANA Holdings Inc. has enjoyed annual growth of about 10 % every year since 2013.
