Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9 (Jiji Press)—The International Olympic Committee said Friday it expects women to account for 48.8% of the athletes in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the highest in Olympic history.

The percentage, up from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics’ 45.6%, is based on the list of 33 sports and 339 events for the Tokyo Games, which was finalized at an Executive Board meeting of the IOC held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the same day.

There are five newly added sports, including baseball and softball.

“I am delighted that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be more youthful and urban and will include more women,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a press release.

When women took part in the Olympics for the first time in the 1900 summer games in Paris, they accounted for only 2.2% of the total participating athletes.
