Tokyo, Sept. 19 (Jiji Press)—Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday launched the new GR sports car brand, under which the company will sell vehicles developed using know-how gained through its involvement in motor racing.

For the next 100 years, Toyota will do things that demonstrate that “cars are fun,” President Akio Toyoda told a GR brand launch event in Tokyo, apparently bearing in mind talk that the industry is in a once-in-100-year change.

The top Japanese automaker will aggregate all its existing sports car brands, such as G’s, into the new GR series.

As the first batch of the GR series, Toyota on Tuesday launched seven models of six vehicles, including the Vitz and Harrier.

Toyota plans to open 39 GR Garage stores in Japan by the end of next March that will specialize in selling vehicles under the GR brand.
