Tokyo, Oct. 3 (Jiji Press)—Japanese online bank Rakuten Bank said Tuesday it has launched a new housing loan service for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT people.

The service allows a same-sex couple to jointly take out a housing loan based on their combined incomes, just like conventional married couples, without any official document certifying same-sex partnership, such as the certificates issued by the municipality of Shibuya in Tokyo.

Rakuten Bank is the first bank operating in Japan to extend housing loans to LGBT couples without partnership certificates, according to the bank.

Only users of a housing consultation service offered by Recruit Sumai are eligible to take out the loans. The bank will judge whether applicants are LGBT couples based on interviews.
