Tokyo, Sept. 12 (Jiji Press)—Honda Motor Co. on Tuesday announced plans to sell electric vehicles in Europe from 2019, with Britain and France aiming to ban sales of fossil-fuel vehicles by 2040.

The Japanese automaker will make motor-driven versions–electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles–available whenever it releases a new vehicle model in Europe from now on, while scaling back sales of new gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Last year, Honda set a goal of raising the proportion of electric-motor vehicles in its global automobile sales to two-thirds in 2030.

In Europe, the company aims to meet the target in 2025. Its annual sales in the region total about 160,000 units.

Honda started lease sales of electric vehicles in the United States last month and plans to launch such vehicles in China in 2018.
