Tokyo, Jan. 23 (Jiji Press)—A Japanese government advisory panel on Monday indicated that any system for possible imperial abdication in the country applies only to Emperor Akihito.
The panel, though not suggesting a specific course of action, highlighted a host of potential problems in an interim report that would arise if a permanent system is created for imperial abdication.
The government has been considering a special one-time law to allow abdication only for Emperor Akihito.
Prime Minister Abe Shinzō will explain the interim report to the speakers and deputy speakers of both chambers of the Diet, Japan’s parliament, on Tuesday.
The report will then be explained to representatives of both ruling and opposition parties so that lawmakers can reach a conclusion on the abdication issue by mid-March, sources familiar with the situation said.
