Hiroshima, Feb. 24 (Jiji Press)—The number of visitors to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in fiscal 2016 has already hit a record annual high, the operator said Friday.

The number of visitors in the fiscal year ending March 31 has already exceeded the previous one-year record high of 1,593,280, marked in fiscal 1991, said the operator of the museum in Hiroshima Prefecture.

So far in fiscal 2016, the number of foreign visitors to the museum has surged 8.5% from the previous year.

The jump was triggered by a historic visit by US President Barack Obama in May last year, museum officials said.

The museum, which opened in 1955, has some 20,000 items, including belongings of those who were killed by the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing, with around 400 items on display. Currently, orizuru paper cranes presented by President Obama when he visited are also on show.
