The amount far exceeded the target of ¥3 million set by the organizer, the federation of Gion Festival preservation associations, according to federation officials.

The annual festival, held in Kyoto in July, features yamahoko float parades, which are registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The problem is the costs, totaling some ¥40 million every year. The expenses have been split among the communities that maintain the floats, but some have fallen into dire straits due to the heavy burden.

Hearing about crowdfunding from a local financial institution, the federation decided that the method fit its wish to get support from a wide range of people.
