Japan Eyes Removal of Expressway over Landmark Tokyo Bridge (News)

Tokyo, July 21 (Jiji Press)—The Japanese infrastructure ministry plans to consider removing the expressway over Tokyo’s landmark Nihonbashi Bridge, in a bid to improve the landscape, it was learned on Friday.

The ministry is looking at moving underground the Inner Circular Route’s 2.9-kilometer section between Takebashi Junction and Edobashi Junction.

For the project, expected to cost several hundred billion yen, construction is seen starting after the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

The project will also be part of the renovation of the aging metropolitan expressway, which was built half a century ago.

The national government, the Tokyo metropolitan government and publicly owned Metropolitan Expressway Co. are slated to discuss a framework for sharing costs among them and other related issues.
