Yamamoto Shin’ichirō, grand steward of the agency, made the announcement at a press conference following a saika procedure earlier in the day, in which the Emperor approved the coming marriage of Princess Mako and Komuro, both 25.

A series of related rituals, including a betrothal ceremony (nōsai no gi), will be carried out before the couple’s wedding, which is expected to take place in autumn next year at the earliest.

Princess Mako, the eldest of the three children of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, and Komuro met five years ago when they were students at International Christian University in Tokyo. They both graduated from ICU in 2014.

At a press conference held at the Akasaka Imperial estate in Tokyo on Sunday afternoon, Princess Mako and Komuro spoke about how their romance started and how they feel now.

Joy after Informal Engagement

Tokyo, Sept. 3 (Jiji Press)—Japanese Princess Mako and her fiancé-to-be, Komuro Kei, expressed joy at a press conference on Sunday after their informal engagement was announced by the Imperial Household Agency the same day.

“I felt really happy and immediately accepted his marriage proposal,” said the princess.

Komuro, also 25, an employee at a law firm in Tokyo, said that he proposed to Princess Mako while they were taking a walk after having a meal together in the capital in December 2013. “I told the princess, ‘Let’s get married,'” he revealed.

Princess Mako and Komuro met five years ago when they were students at International Christian University in Tokyo.

They started to talk closely after the princess sat behind Komuro at a briefing session held in 2012 at ICU for a student exchange program, according to the princess. The two began dating before Princess Mako went abroad to study.
