Cherry blossoms came into full bloom outside Kumamoto Castle on April 9, 2017, almost one year after earthquakes killed dozens of people in the prefecture and caused considerable damage. The Miyukizaka slope outside the castle had been closed to the public after the earthquake, but was reopened specially to let visitors see the sakura. A local woman in her forties visiting with her three children said, “The castle was damaged before I could take the kids to see the cherry blossoms last year. So I wanted to show them the repaired castle and the sakura early.” Another Kumamoto resident, Kawai Isami (76), said, “I cried when I saw the cherry blossoms by Kumamoto Castle. I want to stay healthy until the keep is repaired, so I can climb it again.” (© Jiji)
