Graduated from the Department of Aesthetics and Art History in the Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo. Worked at Jiji Press, Gakken, and Canon before becoming a writer and critic. Lived alone for several years after losing her partner at age 66. Now lives with her eldest daughter and several cats. Is the author of Jinsei hyakunen jidai e no funade (Embarking on an Era When Life Lasts a Hundred Years), Dai-kaigo jidai o ikiru (Surviving the Great Nursing-Care Era), and many other books.
