Kawata Yoshiaki
Head of the Research Center for Societal Safety Science and specially appointed professor in the Kansai University Faculty of Societal Safety Sciences. Professor emeritus, Kyoto University, and executive director of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution. Born in Osaka in 1946. Earned a PhD in civil engineering from Kyoto University. In his present post since 2016, after serving as professor at and head of Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kansai University, and other institutions. Received the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction in 2007. Author of Tsunami saigai zōhoban: Gensai shakai o kizuku (Tsunami Disasters, Expanded Edition: Creating a Disaster-Mitigating Society) and Nihon Suibotsu (Japan Submerged), Shinjidai no kigyō bōsai: 3.11 no kyōkun ni manabu jishin taisaku (A New Generation of Corporate Disaster Management: Earthquake Preparedness Lessons Learned from 3/11).
