    Professor and dean of the Faculty of Letters at Keio University. Vice-president of the Japanese Educational Research Association and member of the Science Council of Japan. Born in 1958. After graduating from Dōshisha University, completed his graduate studies at International Christian University. His fields of expertise include comparative studies of colleges and universities and the intellectual history of higher learning. His works include Gendai kyōiku no sōten, ronten (Points of Dispute and Debate in Contemporary Education) and Taiwa no mukō no daigakuzō (The Ideal University as Seen Through Dialogue; coauthor).
