    Director of the Center for Asia Policy Studies, Philip Knight chair in Japan studies, and senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. A specialist in Japanese foreign economic and trade policy and Japan-US relations, she has also taught at the American University’s School of International Service. Her books include the 2023 Japan’s Quiet Leadership: Reshaping the Indo-Pacific, a Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2024, and the 2017 Dilemmas of a Trading Nation: Japan and the United States in the Evolving Asia-Pacific Order, which won the 2018 Ōhira Masayoshi Memorial Award.
