Member of the editorial board of the foreign desk of the Mainichi Shimbun. After joining the Mainichi Shimbun in 1971, was stationed at several overseas news bureaus, including Tehran (1982–84), Paris (1986–93), and Rome (1996–98). From 1998 to 2001 he served as the director of the newspaper’s foreign desk. Was appointed to his current position in 2002. His published works include Erize kyū no shokutaku (Cuisine at the Élysée Palace) and Kokusai seiji no zero nendai (International Politics, 2000–2010). Recipient of the French government’s National Order of Merit.
