    Freelance writer. Born in Morioka, Iwate, in 1954. Has been traveling to Japan’s outlying islands and remote areas since his student days. Went freelance after working as an editor for travel and other magazines, covering mainly islands, travels, food culture, agriculture, and forestry and fisheries. Has visited nearly all of Japan’s inhabited remote islands. Works include Seto Naikai shimatabi nyūmon (Introduction to Traveling the Islands of the Seto Inland Sea), Nippon shima isan (The Legacy of Japan’s Islands), and Nihon: Shimatabi kikō (Journal of Island Travels: Japan).
