Shimao Arata

Art historian. Member of the editorial committee at the art periodical Kokka. Born in Tokyo in 1953. Completed his master’s degree at the University of Tokyo. Researches widely into Sesshū and other art from the Muromachi period (1333–1568), as well as ink painting in general. Works include Sesshū no Sansui chōkan (Sesshū’s Long Landscape Scroll), Motto shiritai Sesshū (Learn More About Sesshū), and Gasei Sesshū no sugao (The True Face of Sesshū, Saint of Painting).
