    Special staff writer, editorial board member, and commentary board member of the Sankei Shimbun. Born 1946 in Kōchi Prefecture. Graduated from Waseda University in 1970. Joined the Nihon Keizai Shimbun after graduation and served as Washington correspondent, head of its Hong Kong bureau, and member of the editorial board. Was also a fellow with the Asia Foundation and former chair of the European and American Studies Association for the Japan Center for Economic Research. Began working with the Sankei Shimbun in December 2006. Was also part-time lecturer at Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics, at its graduate school, and as a lecturer at Waseda University’s Extension Center Nakano School. Author of books including Jinmingen doru en (Renminbi, Dollar, Yen) and Kenshō Bei-Chū bōeki sensō (Examining the US-China Trade War) and coauthor of Shū Kinpei haiboku zen’ya: Datsu Chūgoku de han’ei suru sekai keizai (The Eve of Xi Jinping’s Defeat: A Thriving World Economy Without China).
