Ueki Masatoshi
Scholar of Buddhist thought and member of the Japan PEN Club. Born in Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, in 1951. Graduated from Kyūshū University, later studying literature at Tōyō University and received PhD in humanities from Ochanomizu University. Studied Indology and Buddhist thought under Nakamura Hajime at the Tōhō Gakuin (Eastern Institute). His books include a complete annotated translation of the Lotus Sutra from Sanskrit (which won the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award), Bukkyō, hontō no oshie (True Teachings of Buddhism), Bukkyō gakusha, Nakamura Hajime (Nakamura Hajime, Buddhist Scholar), and Hokkekyō to wa nani ka (What is the Lotus Sutra?).
