Japan's Emperor, Empress to Visit Vietnam from February 28 (News)
Tokyo, Jan. 20 (Jiji Press)—Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are set to make their first official visit to Vietnam, starting on February 28, with the aim of promoting friendship between the two countries.
The Imperial trip was decided at a cabinet meeting Friday. The trip comes after the couple received an invitation from each of the past Vietnamese presidents who had visited Japan.
On their way back home from Vietnam, the Emperor and the Empress will stop at Bangkok to pay tribute to former Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last October.
While details of the tour have yet to be finalized, the Imperial couple are expected to stay for a total of about seven days in the two Southeast Asian nations, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
This will be the couple's first overseas trip since January 2016, when they made an official trip to the Philippines.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
