South Korean Provincial Governor Visits Takeshima (News)
Seoul, Jan. 25 (Jiji Press)—Kim Kwan-yong, the governor of South Korea's North Gyeongsang Province visited Takeshima, the Sea of Japan islets controlled by Seoul and claimed by Tokyo, on Wednesday morning.
According to the province's announcement the same day, the Japanese side "has recently made false remarks about the islets." The province also said the governor intended to directly check the security conditions of the islets in response to the changing situations on the Korean Peninsula.
The governor posted on Facebook photographs of him and security guards on Takeshima. The Japanese government responded with formal protests of the provincial governor's actions, lodged in both Seoul and Tokyo.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
