Mattis Hails Japan's Host-Nation Support for US Forces (News)
Tokyo, Feb. 4 (Jiji Press)—Visiting US Secretary of Defense James Mattis expressed Washington's appreciation on Saturday for Tokyo's host-nation financial support for US forces in Japan.
At a joint press conference after the day's meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Inada Tomomi in Tokyo, Mattis said that Japan is a model of cost-sharing for other nations to follow. Inada said that she believes Japan is appropriately sharing the burden.
The two did not have specific discussions on issues related to Japan's host-nation support during the meeting that lasted about 90 minutes.
There has been concern in Japan that the administration of new US President Donald Trump may demand an increase in Japan's host-nation financial support as Trump, who took office on January 20, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the amounts Japan is paying.
At the meeting, Inada said, "Keeping the Japan-US alliance strong is very important as it serves as the linchpin of peace and stability in not only Japan but also the entire Asia-Pacific region."[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
