The renovation, covering a total area of some 47,000 square meters, will be one of the largest for Tokyo Disneyland since it opened in 1983 in the city of Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.

At the theme park, a go-kart-type attraction and some other facilities have been or will be closed, while new facilities, including a large-scale attraction and a restaurant featuring the Walt Disney Co. film Beauty and the Beast, will be constructed for opening in spring 2020.

"We will aim to create a place full of incomparable fascinations so as to continue generating a lot of dreams, sensations, and smiles," Oriental Land President Uenishi Kyōichirō said in a ceremony to mark the start of the renovation work.

Other new facilities to be introduced at Tokyo Disneyland include an amusement ride themed on the Disney film Big Hero 6, a live entertainment theater, and a popcorn specialty shop.
