Japan Alarmed by Increasing US–North Korea Tensions (News)
Tokyo, Aug. 10 (Jiji Press)—The Japanese government has been alarmed by increasing tensions amid a bitter war of words between US President Donald Trump and North Korea over the reclusive state's missile development program.
Tokyo will discuss with Washington how to deal with the crisis while strengthening its vigilance and surveillance activities, informed sources said.
"We are on full alert and well-prepared to respond to any contingency situations," Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide told a press conference on Thursday.
"We hope to strengthen the deterrent power of the Japan-US alliance and response capabilities," he added, referring to the so-called two-plus-two meeting of the two countries' foreign and defense ministers to be held in Washington August 17.
North Korea has made repeated provocations despite the UN Security Council's fresh resolution adopted Saturday to strengthen sanctions on Pyongyang in response to its testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles last month.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
