Ex-DP Policy Head Yamao to Quit Party over Scandal (News)
Tokyo, Sept. 7 (Jiji Press)--Former Democratic Party policy head Yamao Shiori on Thursday tendered her resignation from the main opposition party following a magazine report on her alleged extramarital affair.
The development is another blow to DP President Maehara Seiji, elected to the top party post only on September 1, following his flip-flop over whether to appoint high-profile Yamao as the party's secretary-general.
Yamao, 43, submitted the resignation to Secretary-General Ōshima Atsushi. She apparently responded to mounting concerns among DP members about the negative impact of her scandal on the party's performance in the House of Representatives by-elections in October.
In a statement, Yamao denied the alleged affair with a lawyer reported by the Shūkan Bunshun weekly magazine. At a press conference, she apologized for causing trouble to many people but did not accept any questions from reporters.
Ōshima told a different press conference that the party will decide the fate of Yamao as early as Friday. The DP has not made sure whether the report is true, he added.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
