Abe Announces Decision to Dissolve Lower House on September 28 (News)

Tokyo, Sept. 25 (Jiji Press)—Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzō said on Monday that he will dissolve the House of Representatives at the beginning of an extraordinary session of the Diet on Thursday, calling a snap election.

The election for the powerful lower chamber of the Diet will be held on October 22, with the official campaign period starting on October 10, according to informed sources.

Explaining the reason for the snap poll at a press conference, Abe said his government needs immediately to get public judgment on its plan to revise the purpose of the planned October 2019 consumption tax hike.

He vowed to step down if the ruling coalition of his Liberal Democratic Party and Kōmeitō loses a majority in the lower house.

The main opposition Democratic Party and other opposition parties including the Japanese Communist Party are expected to cooperate on a constituency basis, aiming to defeat the ruling coalition.
