Edano, Other DP Liberal Members to Launch New Party (News)
Tokyo, Oct. 2 (Jiji Press)—Democratic Party Deputy President Edano Yukio said Monday that he will form a new political party with other liberal members of the DP opposing the party's effective merger into Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko's new party.
Some 10 DP members, mainly former lawmakers of the House of Representatives, the all-important lower chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament, are expected to join Edano's party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, sources familiar with the situation said.
The October 22 Lower House election is now expected to see a three-way battle among the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Kōmeitō, the alliance of Koike's Kibō no Tō (party of hope) and Osaka-based Nippon Ishin no Kai, and the camp including the Edano party, the Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party.
"Kibō no Tō's philosophy and policies are different from ours," Edano said at a press conference.
"We're determined to firmly protect constitutionalism, democracy and a free society," he said, adding that his new party will take over the DP's basic policies.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
