Electronics Makers Log Record First-Half Profits (News)

Tokyo, Oct. 31 (Jiji Press)—Four of Japan's seven major electric machinery makers posted record-high group net profits for the April–September first half of the fiscal year, according to their earnings data released by Tuesday.

The four are Sony Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., and Fujitsu Ltd.

All seven makers, also including Panasonic Corp., NEC Corp. and Sharp Corp., enjoyed year-on-year growth in consolidated operating profits in the first half of fiscal 2017.

Sony saw its net profit surge eightfold year on year to ¥211.7 billion and its operating profit 3.5-fold to ¥361.8 billion, also a record high on a fiscal first-half basis, on the back of its robust game and music businesses.

In addition, the company's semiconductor operations recovered sharply thanks to the restoration of its chip plant damaged in the powerful earthquakes that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in April last year.
