Wholesalers OK Tsukiji Relocation to Toyosu in October 2018
Tokyo, Nov. 2 (Jiji Press)—Wholesalers at the iconic Tsukiji market in Tokyo's Chūō Ward agreed at a meeting on Thursday to accept the relocation of its functions to the new Toyosu market in neighboring Kōtō Ward in mid-October next year.
The agreement came after the Tokyo metropolitan government last month proposed rescheduling the wholesale food market relocation for September-October 2018.
As conditions for fixing the relocation day, however, the wholesalers decided to demand the completion of additional soil decontamination at Toyosu by the end of next July and the Tokyo governor's declaration of safety of the new market site, as well as safety confirmation by relevant experts.
Concerns about a further delay in the transfer are growing after recent unsuccessful bidding processes for the extra soil cleanup work.
"The relocation may be postponed again, even after the Toyosu market's opening day is fixed," Itō Hiroyasu, chairman of the Tsukiji Market Association, said.[Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
