The cyclamen, which has many indigo petals and is named “Edo no Ao,” was unveiled to the press by the company, a unit of major Japanese food and beverage group Suntory Holdings Ltd.

Shipments will start on Tuesday, mainly for gifts.

“It took ten years to add the blue tint to the existing strains of flowers,” said Takahashi Yasuhiro, president of Taiei Kaen, the flower farm in Narita that developed and produced the blue cyclamen.

“As the cyclamen can withstand hot weather, we’d like people to enjoy them throughout the year,” Takahashi said.
