Nakasone Attempted to Broker China-South Korea Rapprochement (News)

Tokyo, Dec. 20 (Jiji Press)—Then Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro attempted to mediate the normalization of diplomatic ties between China and South Korea when he met in 1986 with Hu Yaobang, the Communist Party of China's leader at the time, according to Japanese diplomatic documents released on Wednesday.

But Hu showed a negative attitude toward the proposed rapprochement with Seoul due to strong concern over the anticipated opposition of North Korea, according to the papers.

On November 8, 1986, Nakasone held talks with Hu at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

In the discussions, Nakasone told Hu that South Korean leaders had asked the Japanese prime minister to convey to the Chinese government Seoul's wish to promote civil exchanges with Beijing if establishing diplomatic relations were not possible.

Nakasone also relayed South Korea's hope that the country and China would set up mutual trade offices, or trade representative offices if possible, in Beijing and Seoul.
