Abe Cabinet Support Rises to 48%: Jiji Poll (News)

Tokyo, Feb. 16 (Jiji Press)—Public support for the cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzō in February rose 2.1 percentage points from January to 48.7%, a Jiji Press opinion poll showed Friday.

The disapproval rating declined 1.7 points to 31.9%.

The results are believed to reflect mainly Abe’s attendance at the opening ceremony for the ongoing Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea on February 9. A lack of major mistakes in recent government management is also considered a positive factor.

The proportion of respondents who appreciate Abe’s attendance at the ceremony stood at 69.3%, far exceeding 19.8% who do not.

Asked about reasons for supporting the Abe cabinet, with multiple answers allowed, 22.5% said there is no other suitable person for prime minister, 11.9% said Abe has leadership skills, and 10.5% said they trust him.
