Energy Self-Sufficiency of Major Economies

A1: 4%

Japan has an energy self-sufficiency ratio of 4% (as of 2008). This was as high as 58% in the 1960s, but fell sharply as the nation shifted from coal to oil. It is also impossible for Japan, as an island country, to purchase electricity from its neighbors.
