The price for regular gasoline in Japan is ¥148.2/liter, according to a September 10, 2012, price survey by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. More than 40% of this price is taxes. As a result of rising gasoline prices worldwide and tax breaks for more fuel-efficient cars, Toyota’s hybrid Prius has held the top spot in domestic new car sales since June 2011.
