Japan’s Cosmetics Exports Hit Record High in 2017 (News)
[2018.02.02]

Tokyo, Feb. 1 (Jiji Press)—Japan’s exports of cosmetics, excluding perfume and hair care products, reached ¥294 billion in 2017, hitting a record high for the fifth straight year, Finance Ministry data show.

The exports have more than tripled over the past decade, thanks to the increased popularity of high-quality Japan-made cosmetics, mainly pricy skin care products, such as lotions, in other parts of Asia.

The growth is also believed to reflect an increase in repeat purchases by visitors to Japan through the Internet and at local stores in their home countries.

Some 90% of the cosmetics exports went to Asian countries. Hong Kong represented the largest proportion at 28%, followed by mainland China at 27% and South Korea at 11%.

In 2007, Japan’s cosmetics exports stood at ¥82.1 billion, of which some 70% were exports to Asian countries.
