Coincheck to Deliver Compensation to Hack-Affected Customers Next Week (News)

Tokyo, March 8 (Jiji Press)—Cryptocurrency exchange operator Coincheck Inc. said Thursday that it plans to deliver compensation totaling ¥46 billion next week to some 260,000 customers affected by a massive hack of the exchange in late January.

In the hacking incident, virtual currency NEM worth ¥58 billion at the time was stolen from the exchange.

The Tokyo-based company suspended customers’ virtual currency withdrawals following the incident, but now plans to lift the measure in stages, company officials said.

“We deeply apologize for causing great inconvenience,” Coincheck President Wada Kōichirō told a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday, adding that he will consider ways, including his resignation, to take responsibility for the incident.

The major virtual currency exchange has a total of 1.7 million customer accounts as of Thursday, according to company officials.

On the same day, the Financial Services Agency issued a second business improvement order to Coincheck since the high-profile hack.

Coincheck said in a statement that it takes the second order seriously and will drastically review its internal control and management systems to ensure appropriate and precise operations in terms of customer protection.
