Traditional Ladder Stunts on Display at Firefighters’ New Year Event (News)
[2018.01.09]

Tokyo, Jan. 6 (Jiji Press)—The Tokyo Fire Department held on Saturday a dezomeshiki New Year event featuring traditional ladder stunts, simultaneous water shooting, firefighting drills, and parades.

The event, which took place at Tokyo Big Sight in the municipality of Kōtō, was joined by some 2,800 people including firemen and registered volunteers, about 150 fire engines, helicopters, and fireboats.

Spectators were particularly attracted by ladder stunts performed by members of the Edo Firemanship Preservation Association and fireboats’ shooting of water with five different colors to mark Tokyo’s hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.

Dezomeshiki is designed to increase morale among firefighters and underscore the importance of disaster preparedness to Tokyo citizens.

This year, the department demonstrated its response operations to nuclear, biological, and chemical emergencies and conducted firefighting and rescue drills under the assumption that a fire broke out in a wooden house-packed area. A foreign rescue team from Hanoi took part in an exercise to find and bring out people from a collapsed building.
