Unari-kun (center), a blue and white jet-eel hybrid representing Narita, Chiba Prefecture, celebrates coming in first in the 2017 Yuru Kyara Grand Prix. The annual competition to choose Japan’s top mascot was held November 19 in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, and featured throngs of fluffy characters from around Japan. Second prize went to Chiryuppi (left) from Chiryū, Aichi Prefecture, a character sporting a purple horse hood and Japanese iris on its head. (© Jiji)
