Dolling Up the Zeitgeist (Japan in Photos)

Doll maker Mataro unveiled a tongue-in-cheek look at the movers and shakers of 2017 in a series of hinaningyō dolls based on the year’s top news icons. Hina dolls are customarily displayed in the days leading up to the hinamatsuri, or doll festival, on March 3. Mataro will exhibit its creations that include renderings of record-setting sprinter Kiryū Yoshihide and Ueno Zoo’s baby panda Shan Shan at its main store in Tokyo from January 4 to March 3, 2018.
