Praying to Pass: Students Seek Divine Assistance for Entrance Exams (Japan in Photos)

Students hang wooden ema tablets at Yushima Tenmangū in Tokyo on January 12, 2018, praying for success in entrance examinations. The shrine is dedicated to the scholar Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), who was deified after his death as the god of learning. A common phrase used on the ema is 合格祈願 (gōkaku kigan) “a prayer to pass.” January 13–14 was the biggest exam weekend of the year as hundreds of thousands of young Japanese sat the National Center Test for University Admissions.
