Festive Heights: Japanese City Celebrates “Hinamatsuri” with a Massive Doll Tower (Japan in Photos)

Elaborately dressed dolls adorn a red-carpeted tower in Kōnosu, Saitama Prefecture, as part of the city’s celebration of hinamatsuri, or doll festival, which is observed every year on March 3. The 7-meter, 31-stepped pyramid is decorated with more than 1,800 dolls and is the largest such platform in Japan. The display, now in its fourteenth year, originated as a way to draw attention to Kōnosu’s dollmaking history, which stretches back almost 400 years. (© Nippon.com)
