Effective September 13, passengers boarding domestic flights in Japan will be subject to the same security screening procedures as those applied to international passengers. This is part of the heightening of efforts to prevent terrorism as Japan prepares to host the Olympic and Paralympic games next year. As part of the security check, passengers will be required to remove outerwear, such as coats and jackets, and some types of footwear, such as boots, and place these items on trays for X-ray inspection. In addition, security personnel will in some cases touch passengers’ skin with explosive trace detection swabs.
