Japan will slowly phase out oil imports from Russia while maintaining its interests in oil projects there to minimize adverse effects on Japanese people's lives, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Monday. His remarks to reporters were made after he told a virtual meeting of the Group of Seven nations that Japan will ban Russian oil imports "in principle," as part of additional sanctions on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
