Boston, April 16 (Jiji Press)--Yuki Kawauchi won the 2018 Boston Marathon on Monday, becoming the first Japanese runner to win the prestigious race in 31 years.

The previous Japanese winner of the race was Toshihiko Seko, in 1987.

Kawauchi, 31, who finished the race in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 58 seconds, is the eighth Japanese winner of the race and his victory is the ninth for Japanese runners.

It is the first time that a Japanese runner has won a race of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a program launched in 2006.

During Monday's race, which took place in strong winds and heavy rain, Kawauchi overtook defending champion Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya at a point past 40 kilometers after the start. Kirui finished second, in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 23 seconds.
