Hiroshima, July 9 (Jiji Press)--Local residents are at a loss after torrential rain struck Hiroshima Prefecture and other parts of western Japan over the weekend.
Landslides hit a residential complex in Aki Ward in the city of Hiroshima, preventing entry by car and elderly residents from getting out. Residents there helped each other by sharing food.
"After a blackout on Friday night, I heard something roaring," said Takeshi Todou, 79, who has lived in the apartment block for 45 years.
When his television went off, he did not know what was happening. But soon big rocks and driftwood destroyed fences and windows of his apartment.
"A nearby mudslide-control dam seems to have collapsed," he said.
