Death Toll from Japan Heavy Rain Rises to 179

Tokyo, July 12 (Jiji Press)--The death toll from the torrential rain that mainly struck western Japan through the weekend has reached 179 in 12 prefectures, local authorities said Thursday.
A total of 59 people remain unaccounted for in five prefectures.
By prefecture, the number of deaths, caused by landslides and other disasters resulting from the heavy rain, stood at 74 in Hiroshima, 58 in Okayama, 26 in Ehime, five in Kyoto and three each in Yamaguchi and Fukuoka.
Of the missing people, 38 are from Hiroshima and 17 from Okayama.
Search and rescue operations and infrastructure recovery work continued in stricken areas.
