Tokyo, July 18 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese Ministry of Finance has appointed Ikuko Shirota as the first female director of its Public Relations Office.
Shirota assumed the role on Tuesday.
The move seems to reflect the ministry's hope for smooth communication with women in the press after Junichi Fukuda resigned as vice minister in spring for his alleged sexual harassment of a female reporter.
Shirota, born in Tokyo, joined the ministry in 2001 after graduating from Keio University.
She served as deputy director of the Income Tax and Property Tax Policy Division and director of the personnel planning office at the Secretarial Division.
