Lausanne, Switzerland, July 18 (Jiji Press)--The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will begin with a softball match in the city of Fukushima, northeastern Japan, on July 22, two days before the opening ceremony, according to its schedule approved by the executive board of the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday.
Holding the opening event in the capital of Fukushima Prefecture will highlight progress in recovery and reconstruction following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Fukushima is one of the three northeastern Japan prefectures hardest hit by the disaster and home to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holding Inc.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, which was heavily damaged in the disaster.
At the 2020 Games, baseball will kick off with a match on July 29 also in the city of Fukushima.
The competition schedule for swimming remains to be fixed. The organizing committee of the Tokyo Games, the IOC and the International Swimming Federation, or FINA, failed to reach an agreement on when to race finals.
